Post Debate Reality - The Unraveling of Trump and the Support Shift Toward Kamala

Episode Summary

Yes, the polls are still underrepresenting the actual advantage the Democrats have right now. But they are beginning to show an outside-of-the-margins lead for Kamala. Trump and JD are doubling down on tier weird craziness. That craziness is terrorizing many American communities but they don't care. It's maddening. Let's go back in time to observe some Republican's fear of the rising Kamala going back 15 years. They failed to snuff her out then. They saw a future president, and now here we are. I feel a landslide-a-comin'. It feels like a long awaited destiny.

Here on the ground, change happens fast. Problems feel frequent and urgent. It's loud, and anxiety runs high. From a satellite view, the earth looks the same as it did thousands of years ago. We've been here before. Let's learn m from our past and shoot for a better future. Hello, and welcome to this episode of a satellite View. I'm Todd Mickelson, your host, speaking at you from Sunday, September 15, 2024. In the space and time continuum, we're going to talk about how different everything is now than it was a week ago. Last week, I told you that we. I would delve into talking about the polls, and it's good that I put it off, actually, because the polls are completely different now than they were a week ago, and they're likely still changing because, uh, not all of the consensus is in after the debate. The big debate that happened on Tuesday happened Tuesday evening. I was watching something that I had saved that was talking about last weekend's new, uh, York Times Sienna poll that everybody was all scared of, wasn't looking like there was any change since Kamala Harris took the race over from, uh, Joe Biden. These people that were talking about it on this clip I was watching, I'm not actually going to use it part of the clip, but I wanted to, uh, reference it to take some notes again about Bowles. There's a lot of, uh, changes going on with, like, for instance, support of black american voters, a lot more support for Kamala than there was for Joe Biden, and there was a lot for Joe Biden, but not as much as for Joe Biden in 2020. So that's coming back. What else about the polls? These people were so nervous about this poll, and they said, you know, maybe tonight in the debate, something can change people's minds, because at least, uh, 28% of the people polled in this New York Sienna poll said that they would like to know more about Kamala Harris. They also had nothing new that they needed to learn about Trump. So what that tells us is there's a lot of room for improvement for Kamala Harris. There's no room for improvement for Donald Trump. As a matter of fact, now that we know what happened in the debate, the polls are, oh, uh, I don't know where to begin with what happened in the debate. Let's begin with, uh, some memories. Here is footage from a debate watch party. Okay, these are people watching the debate on Tuesday night. No, they had not previously seen it. No, they weren't ready for this queue. Yes, it sounds like everybody was on the same page in this room. Listen to this. Because they're so embarrassed by it in Springfield, they're eating the dogs. All right, all right. Uh, that's the kind of reaction that Trump was getting. Here's another great, uh, moment. And this is at a bar where they were having a debate watch party. I'll explain to you why they're laughing at this afterwards. Get this. No, get this. And the president at the time invited the Taliban to Camp David, a place of storied significance for us as Americans. A place where we honor the importance of american diplomacy, where we invite and receive respected were leaders. And this former president. Yeah. And then you can actually hear people starting to clap a little bit. The reason that they were laughing and clapping is because she. This is more of a visual, if you remember watching the debate, she said, and this. And she kind of looked over at Trump and looked up and down at him and took a long pause and then said, former president, when, you know, she was thinking, piece of feces. This piece of feces standing next to me. So people at the bar loved it. Some people are pretty bummed about it. This is Frank Luntz being on the Piers Morgan show. Frank Luntz is a pollster, actually, but he's always been very. He was totally behind George W. Bush back in the old days. He kind of got his start maybe 1520 years ago, uh, probably about 20 years ago. Speaking of pieces of dung, uh, he has pissed me off constantly. I read a book of his because he was the guy who always helped Bush name things like the Clear Skies act, where they lifted regulations on polluters, you know, should be the anti clear Skies act. But Frank Luntz was the guy who said, name it something good and people will support it, no matter how bad it is. Here is his take. He wasn't, I don't think he was in that bar or at that other watch party. I think he was at his own little watch party. And, um, I don't think he had a good night. Joining me right now is pollster and political strategist Frank Luntz, who said a few days ago that the winner of a debate will win the election. Uh, well, Frank, do you think that's the case? Do you think Kamala won? And does that mean she may now win the election? I think more accurately it says, Donald Trump lost. And this is not the worst debate performance I've seen in my career, but it's very close to it. The conversations about people eating dogs and cats, calling the leader of Hungary one of the greatest world leaders repeatedly missing the opportunity to focus on inflation and affordability and the complete inability to present his point of view without completely tearing into her, into Joe Biden, into whomever was in his sights. It was a pretty negative performance. Pretty pessimistic, cynical, contemptuous. And I think that this will cost him. Yes. I'm trying to decide if I want to go on record, and the answer is yes. I think that he loses because of this debate performance. Wow, really? All right, Frank Luntzen. Uh, that's pretty big. That is pretty big. He's been kind of going in this direction for a few weeks now, talking about Trump and how ludicrous he thinks Trump is acting. Of course, this debate now puts him over the edge, and he has made his official prediction. Guys like this don't do that unless they feel extremely sure they're going to be correct. That's his prediction. Bill Maherenite, he's not necessarily a right wing guy. He kind of tries to pass himself off as sort of a libertarian. I don't know. Uh, sometimes he bugs the crap out of me. He used to be a comedian. He still kind of is a comedian. And sometimes he is actually really funny on his show, talking about politics now. Mostly. He also pissed a lot of people off back in 2015 and 16 because he was saying, we got to take this Trump thing seriously. And everyone was like, no, it's a joke, man. He's a joke. And Bill Maher was like, no, I'm telling you, he can win this. One of the predictions he made was, Trump's not going to leave. If he loses in 2020, he's not going to leave peacefully. Well, he was right about that. Bill Maher, who's been correct about a lot of things, also does not want to make predictions unless he feels very sure of them. And now he's got this record of making surprising predictions that have come true. So he's not going to want to go on record this early when he doesn't need to yet. But he, on his show a couple days ago, said the whole, uh, Springfield's migrants are eating dogs and cats was the thing. And the moment where Trump lost, and he predicts that Trump will lose and Kamala Harris will be the next president. More and more predictions coming out. Last week, I told you about the 13 keys to the White House. Alan Lichtman made his official prediction. He's been correct in every presidential race since 1984. In his predictions, he says Kamala Harris will win. Uh, somebody suggested, too, that maybe the 13th. Let's see, no, there is 13 keys. The 14th key to the White House should be Taylor Swift's endorsement. You can hear Alan Lichtman going, I'm adding a 14th key, where if, uh, Taylor Swift were to come out and endorse whichever candidate, that is one key that will lead you to. So it's. I'm adding a key. If Taylor Swift. You know, and, uh, another funny thing, uh, all these Republicans just losing it on Tuesday night. Wow. Tuesday night was incredible. Was. I don't know. I had a really fun night. Heidi, she can't watch these things, so she missed it. But she's seen probably all of it since then, watching all the clips, because there were so many great moments. We're going to play a couple of them for you at some point. Then Taylor Swift comes out and endorses and wrote a very eloquent piece in her endorsement of Kamala Harris. Also kind of saying, I had to do this because Trump put up those AI pictures of me saying that I was endorsing Trump. Well, I have to set the record straight. So she's insinuating, maybe I wouldn't have endorsed anybody. But since Trump was lying about me, I felt like I had to set the record straight. So, yes, I am endorsing Kamala Harris. And she signed it childless. Ah, cat lady. A dig on JD Vance and then Fox News and all the right wing people, even that night were saying, okay, well, let's see how she fares in the marketplace. One of them said they think that, uh, it's gonna ruin her career. She's got billions of fans. Uh, probably, you could say in the world, she's a pop sensation. I think she beats Michael Jackson and everybody, you know, I mean, yeah, it's gonna ruin her career because there are so many Trump supporters who normally would go see Taylor Swift. More than half of her audience, probably three quarters of her audience, are conservatives who don't want her to. And she's going to lose all of her fans. Right. Okay. Okay. Uh, we do have more clips to get to. Oh, I don't know. This segment is going quick. We're having fun, though. At least I'm having fun. I hope you're having fun. JD Vance, this morning, actually, they put him on the Sunday morning shows. They asked him again, will Trump veto a national abortion ban? And he said, well, you know, I've learned my lesson about talking for Mister Trump without, uh, talking to him first, which means they haven't spoken to each other all week. They didn't speak about that before the debate. JD Vance and Donald Trump aren't speaking to each other. Donald Trump's not running a campaign. He has repeatedly made a fool of himself since the debate. He thinks he's cleaning up his debate. He thinks he's helping himself. He did an idiotic, disastrous press conference in California. And again, this isn't because he's campaigning. It's because somebody wanted to do a fundraiser for him out there. So he thinks, oh, well, I'm out there. Why don't we tell everybody to come to my golf course and I'll do a press conference. No money is spent, and he's going to make a spectacle. Well, he doesn't realize that these spectacles are not good for him. Uh, yes, it can be bad for you. No, not all publicity is good publicity. You're not a rock star. He seems to have completely lost it. And there are even some mainstream media people now starting to talk about his cognitive decline. CNN played clips of him from a, uh, 2016 debate alongside this debate, showing the cognitive decline. Let's go to. Here's a clip from the debate that I think is really, really good from Kamala Harris. Understand why the european allies and our NATO allies are so thankful that you are no longer president and that we understand the importance of the greatest military alliance the world has ever known, which is NATO, and what we have done to preserve the ability of Zelensky and the Ukrainians to fight for their independence. Otherwise, Putin would be sitting in Kyiv with his eyes on the rest of Europe, starting with Poland. And why don't you tell the 800,000 Polish Americans right here in Pennsylvania how quickly you would give up for the sake of favor and what you think is a friendship with what is known to be a dictator who would eat you for lunch. That is masterful. Absolutely masterful. Great pivoting. She later then went, uh, to a, um, polish event in Pennsylvania. Really smart of the campaign, talking to families in Pennsylvania who have people living in Poland, family members, you know, living in Poland, and they're worried about this war expanding into Poland. Kamala Harris knows it, and her campaign knows it. Here's something that Paul Krugman then says, just a reminder, Trump did not have a bad night. This is just who he is and has been all along. Probably this is also who Kamala Harris has been all along. But now she has broken through the negative narratives that have clung to her, and that really seems to be what has happened this week. We've come to sort of a breaking point where Kamala Harris is finally coming through and people are starting to see who she is. I have told you before that I think she's always been this person. I rooted for her back in 2019 cause I thought she was the best candidate, and I think she was, but I don't think people were ready for her yet. And I think people were too nervous to run a black woman against Donald Trump. Everyone was just nervous that Trump might win again. And Joe Biden, of course, rightfully so. Everybody thought he had the best chance of winning. Well, he won. And I've said before on this show how elated I was that he chose her as his VP running mate because I think he saw the same future I was hoping for. I thought, okay, this. This can work. Biden wins. This is me thinking in 2020, I think is when she dropped out in early 2020. And I was really disappointed that she dropped out. But then I thought then he named her as his VP. I think even before he did that, I was thinking, wow, what if Joe Biden picked her as his VP running mate and then Biden is basically a one term president, which is what he was actually saying he was intending to do back then. And then Kamala Harris is the vice president. She's got a great chance of winning and becoming the first woman president. And here we are. Other people were nervous about her way back. Yeah, we've got some more things to talk about. I still haven't gotten into the polls. Like I told you I was going to do as much as I would like to. So when we come back, we will be talking about that and more here on a satellite view. I'm Todd Mickelson. We'll be right back. M. Yes. Wow. Thank you. Thank you. No, it's not for me. Who do you think that audience was for it? Taylor Swift? Uh, Aerosmith in 1978, Michael Jackson. Uh, it was for Kamala Harris. Almost 20,000 people. The visual, this place is filled to the rafters, literally to the rafters wall. I mean, all the way up to the ceiling is what that means. Absolutely over packed. This is when Kamala Harris came out from behind the stage and came up onto the stage. Uh, it's pretty mind blowing. Now, also, what's mind blowing is where this is. This is in North Carolina. North Carolina. North Carolina is where this is. I want to play for you something from the, uh, Lawrence O'Donnell show talking about North Carolina. Lawrence has been all over Kamala Harris for, uh, 15 years. He first met her, I believe he said, in 2009, and believed he was seeing a, ah, future president at the time he had her on his show. I'm gonna play you a bit of that for another story we're gonna get to here. But here is Lawrence talking about North Carolina. Vice President Harris went to North Carolina today, where she has opened up the new possibility for Democrats to win the electoral college with North Carolina's 16 elections electoral votes. Uh, the democratic presidential candidate has not won North Carolina since 2008, when Barack Obama did it in his first presidential campaign. Donald Trump has won North Carolina twice. Now, if Donald Trump loses North Carolina this time, that would virtually eliminate any Trump chance of winning the electoral college. With recent polls in North Carolina showing a three point gap between the candidates, the most recent poll shows Kamala Harris at 50 and Donald Trump at 47. If that's what happens on Election Day in North Carolina, Kamala Harris will be president. Here is North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper speaking to NBC's Nandia Guamu tonight after vice president at Vice President Harris campaign event. There's a reason why Donald Trump spent more money in August in North Carolina than any other state. Because they're panicking. They know that Kamala Harris is at least tied or maybe even taking the lead in North Carolina. Donald Trump has no other path to the presidency. He must win North Carolina. We know that if Kamala Harris wins North Carolina, she is the next president of the United States. We did this in 2008. North Carolina voted for Barack Obama and made history. North Carolina is ready to make history again. All right, very interesting. North Carolina. Now, a new ABC poll. This is an, um, this is Ipsos taking a poll for ABC. I don't understand what that means either, but, but it's a very credible poll. And as of yesterday, this new poll, credited by ABC, ABC, saying, you know, we stand behind this, has Harris up 52 to 46 with likely voters. Simon Rosenberg says, this has been a very good week of polling for the VP. He has a list of ten more. I believe it is polls. Uh, morning console, another ipsos. Uh, RMG d four p. Uh, Yahoo something times south. South Cal. Um, a bunch of polls. I don't understand the ins and outs of all the different names and polls either, but this is ten more polls where every single one has Harris ahead, ranging from 50 to 45. One of them is 47 to 42. She's still up by 551 to 47, up by four. Two of them are up by 512345. Are up by four. Two are up by three, and one is up by two. Harris ahead. In all of these polls right now on MSNBC, they said, oh, this is a razor thin race. The newest poll has Harris at 52 and Trump at 46, that's a plus six. That's not razor thin. All of these experts say things like, the Democrats need to be up by three, and I've also heard three to five in order to make up for the electoral college problem. Well, she's up by six right now. And like I said before, with all these new registered voters, by the way, registered voters went up immensely during the debate. They were tracking it minute by minute. And when Trump said the stupidest things, it went up a lot. And then later on in the night, when Taylor Swift endorsed Harris voter registrations, she put a link saying, go here to register to vote. And over 400,000 people used that link to go register to vote. And there were even more than that registering to vote otherwise. And now we're going to do our back in time machine. We're going to go back to October 2010. As I said earlier, Lawrence O'Donnell has been covering Kamala Harris probably longer than any other pundit. Uh, now, like I said, we're back in October. This is Halloween, October 31, 2010, on the Lawrence O'Donnell show on MSNBC. Joining me now, uh, from Los Angeles, California's democratic attorney general, general candidate, Kamala Harris. Kamala, can you get, tell the country the story behind that ad that Karl Rove is running against you? Well, Lawrence, about a week ago, we learned that Karl, uh, Rove and Gillespie put together about $1.1 million in money, um, to fund an independent expenditure attack ad against my campaign focused on Los Angeles. We, uh, also learned that the expenditure was funded by tobacco, oil and insurance companies. And, um, as you have mentioned, there's a lot of speculation about why. But, uh, what that tells me is that they clearly know that we can win and they obviously don't like, uh, our position on many of the issues that I believe are important, clearly not only to California, but the rest of the country. That's Kamala Harris talking. When she was running for attorney general in California, Karl Rove was really scared of her back then. Karl Rove, like Lawrence O'Donnell, first got a look at Kamala Harris in the late aughts, and he saw a, ah, future president, and he felt like he had to basically drown the baby in the bathtub, kill any chance of Kamala Harris rising in politics by putting her out of business. In her very first election in California in 2010, Carl Rove, he was the mastermind, uh, that gave us the nightmare of George W. Bush. He ran those campaigns. Everyone credited him with winning, especially in 2004, because George W. Bush had already become quite the disaster, even by 2004. So Karl Rove, again, not a good person, he wrote, entitled a catastrophic debate for Trump. He wrote it this week. I'll read a little bit from it. This is Karl Rove this week, quote, it matters how debating candidates carry themselves. There it was no contest. Miss M. Harris came across as calm, confident, strong, and focused on the future. Mister Trump came across as hot, angry, and fixated on the past, especially his own. She mastered the split screen, projecting confidence and wordlessly undercutting him by smiling while shaking her head as he spoke. Many undecided and swing voters will make up their minds less on any single issue than on their visceral reactions to the candidates. Miss Harris did herself much good with that crowd Tuesday. Mister Trump did not. Even more voters wanted to learn something new and reassuring about the candidates in the debate. She provided them plenty while he didn't. There's no putting lipstick on this pigeous. Mister Trump was crushed by a woman he previously dismissed as dumb as a rock. Which raises the question, what does that make him? That is Karl Rove writing about Donald Trump this week. Karl Rove wants Kamala Harris to win. Um, a lot of Republicans, uh, there are meetings going on with Republicans, not only now, ah, that there already was Republicans against Trump. Now there's Republicans for Harris more and more and more, and they're meeting in huge groups. Also, Donald Trump and JD Vance, uh, doubling down on this b's about haitian Americans in Springfield, Ohio. They say 20,000 illegal Haitians invaded Springfield. That's not true. Less than 5000 Haitians came to Springfield because Springfield is resurging. They're trying to, uh, invigorate the town. And they are. There are plenty of jobs that they were having trouble filling, and haitian migrants are coming in and filling those jobs. There's even a clip on PBS of a guy who runs some sort of factory in Springfield, Ohio. And he said, these Haitians, they're great workers. I swear to God, they're better than the people that I was having here before. These people are here to work, and they're not here for any B's. They don't have drug problems. They don't have all these excuses. Like a lot of my, um, like, I've been having trouble with employees for years. These haitian people are coming in here and getting to work. I love having them. I'd like more. That's what's actually happening. And then, although we're laughing at, everybody's laughing at Donald Trump saying, they're eating our, uh, dogs. They're eating the dogs, they're eating the cats. That has now rained terror down on this town. The haitian people now living in that town are scared for their lives. They're being attacked on the streets. They are afraid to come out of their houses. They canceled a, uh, gathering that they were going to have because they're scared to come out of their houses. They rescheduled it on Facebook, uh, streaming or something like that. They didn't feel like it was safe. These people are being terrorized. Hospitals and elementary schools had to evacuate because of bomb threats. And then just today, a college in the town went on lockdown, I guess is what. What they had to do, because somebody said, I'm going to go on campus and start shooting, and I'm going to look for Haitians and I'm going to shoot him. And JD Vance went on tv and doubled down on these lies today. He even admitted to Dana Bash that he created this story in order to get the media to pay attention. He admits the story is false, but he still is doubling down on it. Theyre saying horrible, vile things. Uh, there was a young man, uh, I dont know how old he was. I think he was just a boy. I think he was a teenager. Aidan Clark, he got hit by a car in an accident, and he died. And it just so happened the driver of the car was a 60 year old haitian immigrant. Not illegal. All of these people are legal. Theyre here legally. Theyre not illegal. Then JD Vance started talking about this. Aidan Clark, and so did Donald Trump, you know, talking about how the Haitians are killing the children. Aidan Clark's dad has made a public statement saying, please stop this. Get my son's name out of your filthy mouths. Donald Trump and JD Vance. People are being terrorized in this town now, uh, like neo Nazis, proud boys, even the KKK, sending threatening notes. Some proud boys were marching in the streets yelling, you know, they're just trying to scare people. This just I watching the father of Aidan Clark talking about this, you know, it's bad enough that his child died, and now all this extra attention. It's just, you know, fuck you, Donald Trump is all I have to say. What an absolute piece of filth. This guy is not a human. He's a nazi piece of dung. So many words that I'm trying not to say. I already said one of them. They're going through my head right now. Anyway. It's just absolutely infuriating. How do you think you would feel if you were a haitiana immigrant? The haitian people are scared all over the country, there was a gathering of haitian Americans in Florida to protest this stupid story that Donald Trump amplified, by the way, to 67 million, um, viewers of the debate. That's incredible enough. 49% of, uh, haitian Americans live in Florida. The next states where the largest percentage of haitian Americans live is Pennsylvania and Georgia. Donald Trump is pushing away voters. He's ostracizing voters, and Kamala Harris is picking up voters. You've heard me before talk about Florida and how I think Kamala Harris has a chance of winning Florida. Everybody's saying, that's crazy. I think I'm the only one who's saying it, except for some people who live in Florida, by the way. And also there are some people who live in Texas who say, man, I don't know, uh, it's feeling not red here anymore. Donald Trump has lost his support, and he didn't have enough of it to begin with. Just to show you that I'm not so biased, I have a complaint about Tim Walls. Okay. He and I are about the same age. I try and dress well, and, uh, you know, I have, you know, uh, stylish glasses. I think about my appearance. Tim Walls, he goes to the state fair in, like, a t shirt and a baseball cap. And now all the ladies are loving Tim walls. He's so cute. He's just so lovable. He's so huggable. I love that he wants to hug everybody. And I feel like, uh, you know, people think I'm a creep when I walk around the mall trying to hug people, you know? I mean, what the hell? F you, Tim. No, I'm obviously, I'm kidding. I love me some Tim walls. Always have met him a few times. He's the real deal. I'm jealous of him because now he's got all the ladies. I don't know what I got to do to try and get the ladies. Uh, Tim waltz, uh, I don't know. He's a lady magnet at this point in time. But, um, I'm not going to be jealous. He deserves it. He's a very charming guy. I have a crush on him. Uh, he is the real deal. He makes you feel special no matter who you are. I've said this before about him. I was in politics to the degree that I ran for a seat twice. I've worked on a lot of campaigns for a lot of campaigns for a lot of candidates. And I've worked on other things at the Capitol here in Minnesota, and that's where I got to meet Tim walls a few times. Tim Walls has also come out here to support our candidates. That's how generous he is. Same with Peggy Flanagan, by the way. She was just out here this last weekend supporting one of our candidates way out here in the red zone. She is our lieutenant governor, soon to be our governor, when Tim Walls has to resign as our governor to become vice president. And then Peggy Flanagan, the first native american person to become a lieutenant governor, will then be the first native american person to become a governor of a state in the United States. Anyway, this is such hard work that these people do. Tim Walz is the hardest working. I haven't met all the governors or watched them. Um, I haven't been exposed to them. But he's got to be the hardest working governor in the country, certainly the most accomplished with what he helped get pushed through with, along with a lot of other really good people here in Minnesota. I'm sure you've heard those stories. Tim deserves the latest attention that he's getting. So good for Tim Walls, our, uh, future vice president of the United States. Remember, the polls now are starting to improve, yet when they talk about likely voters, she's ahead 52 to 46. Six point lead. That's really great. Now, the most likely voters are, uh, is this intense, record breaking amount of people just now registering to vote. They are the most likely voters, but they are not a part of that poll because they've never voted before. So they're not currently thought of as a likely voter. These people signed up because Taylor Swift is helping them sign up. They signed up when Trump made a fool of himself in the debate. And the demographics of a lot of these people who are registering to vote all vote for democrats. Trump is losing support. Kamala is gaining support. If she wins North Carolina, which it looks very likely she's going to. There was even a clip of JD Vance saying, hey, uh, you know, we're in North Carolina here. If we, uh, if. If we don't take North Carolina in this election, uh, probably it's going to be really hard for us to win at all. But I'm feeling kind of good about what's going on here. Well, if Trump doesn't win North Carolina, he can't win the presidency. Harris will be president, and she's feeling really good about how it's going. She's not just kind of feeling okay, she's feeling really strong. You heard that audience. Yes. Anyway, we're keeping each other sane in this chaotic year. Getting pretty fun. It's looking better and better all the time. If she's ahead by six points in that poll, and so many of these people aren't a part of that poll. How much do you think she's really ahead? I'm not making predictions, but I don't know. I can feel a landslide, a coming. Uh, even established corporate media can't deny it anymore. Trump is unraveling. JD Vance is an idiot, and Kamala Harris is so good at this, always has been. But now we all get to see it, and it's quite majestic. So I'm feeling really good about this year. Two weeks from now, I'm gonna be on a trip to Washington, DC. So we're not gonna do the show in two weeks, but we will be doing the show next week. I'll speak at you again then. You've been listening to a, uh, satellite view with Todd mickelson. Go to toddmichelson.com for links and more information.
